Yubico 2025 Report: Outdated Auth Methods Leave Users Vulnerable to Sophisticated Phishing Attacks

Despite the growing threat of phishing attacks, users and companies are still not doing enough to protect themselves. The Yubico 2025 report shows that outdated authentication methods are leaving us vulnerable.

In the picture we can see three boys standing near the desk on it, we can see two computer systems towards them and one boy is talking into the microphone and they are in ID cards with red tags to it and behind them we can see a wall with an advertisement board and written on it as Russia imagine 2013.

Yubico 2025 Report: Outdated Auth Methods Leave Users Vulnerable to Sophisticated Phishing Attacks

Alarming figures from the Yubico 2025 report reveal a worrying trend in cybersecurity. Despite the rise in sophisticated phishing attacks, many users still rely on outdated authentication methods, and companies lag in implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA).

The report shows that 56% of professionals and 60% of individuals primarily use usernames and passwords for authentication, leaving them vulnerable to attacks. The situation is even more concerning given that 70% of respondents believe phishing attacks have become more successful with AI, and 78% consider these attacks increasingly sophisticated. In the US and UK, there's a growing recognition of hardware security keys and passkeys as the most secure options, with 34% and 37% of respondents favouring them respectively, a significant increase from last year.

On the positive side, France has seen a remarkable surge in personal MFA usage, jumping from 29% in 2024 to 71% in 2025. However, globally, only 48% of respondents reported their companies using MFA across all business applications. This gap highlights a pressing need for companies to bolster their social security measures. The report also found that 44% of global participants admitted to engaging with phishing communications, with 62% of Gen Z indicating interaction with phishing scams.

The Yubico 2025 report underscores the urgent need for individuals and companies to adopt more secure authentication methods. While there's been progress in some areas, such as the increased awareness of hardware security keys and passkeys, the persistence of outdated methods and the lack of MFA implementation in businesses remain significant concerns. As phishing attacks become more sophisticated, it's crucial for everyone to stay vigilant and prioritise robust cybersecurity measures.
