Windows 10 support termination by Microsoft sparks disagreement, leading to public outcry over forced upgrades

Microsoft has declared that it will officially end standard security support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. However, the tech giant is offering an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that allows users to continue receiving security updates for an additional year, through October 13, 2026.

This ESU option is available at no extra cost for consumers if they enroll by installing the mandatory update KB5063709 and meet requirements such as running Windows 10 version 22H2 and using a Microsoft account. The enrollment wizard for ESU is being rolled out gradually and can be accessed via Windows Update settings.

The decision to end support for Windows 10 has raised concerns among some users, including Lawrence Klein, who has filed a lawsuit demanding that Microsoft extend Windows 10 support until its market share drops below 10%. However, there is no publicly available information or credible source linking any such lawsuit to a change in Microsoft's Windows 10 support timeline.

Microsoft's plan, if the lawsuit fails, is for users to either rely on Windows Backup, pay for another year of updates, or migrate to a new system entirely. Klein argues that Microsoft's decision is leaving millions at risk, as millions of individuals and businesses, including those holding sensitive consumer data, will be exposed to heightened cybersecurity risks once updates stop.
