The importance of stealth fighters for the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been underscored in light of the evolving defense landscape in South Asia. This awareness extends beyond potential threats from Pakistan, as the IAF must also stay vigilant regarding Chinese military readiness. The intrusion of the Chinese Army into Indian territory in Ladakh during 2020 serves as a stark reminder.

The importance of stealth fighters takes on renewed significance as India navigates the shifting defense landscape in South Asia. Not just Pakistan, but China's preparedness should also be on India's radar after their 2020 border incursion in Ladakh.

During a chat with journalists at the Shangri-la Defence Dialogue, the Chief of Defence Staff, Anil Chauhan, admitted that Indian Rafale fighter jets were taken down in past conflicts with Pakistan Air Force, using Chinese-made JF-17 fighter jets, heightening the need for a stealth fighter plane.

The Clamor for Stealth Fighters

Beyond his statement, the necessity of stealth fighters in South Asia's evolving security environment is undeniable. Given the ongoing tensions with Pakistan, India must also remain vigilant about China's intentions. In an exclusive conversation, defense expert Colonel (Retired) Sanjeet Sirohi emphasized India's need for a stealth fighter.

Chengdu J-20 vs F-35

Colonel Sirohi pointed out that China's Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter, equipped with PL-15 long-range missiles, falls short against the F-35, which boasts superior avionics. The J-20 includes a larger fuel load but isn't suitable for air-to-ground missions. Before US President's offer of the F-35 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in February, Russia presented its stealth fighter, the Su-57. Despite the J-20's edge in some areas, the F-35 continues to be considered a superior stealth fighter compared to both the Chinese and Russian variants.

What Makes the F-35 Superior?

According to Colonel (Retired) Sanjeet Sirohi, the F-35 is the best stealth fighter of its time, having been tested in various scenarios, including during Israel's attack on Iran. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states, including the US Air Force, possess this cutting-edge aircraft. He also highlighted multiple F-35 variants, such as those with vertical take-off and landing capabilities and models suited for the Indian navy.

F-35 vs Su-57

The perks of the Su-57 include better range and speed. However, its speed of 2,137 km and range of 1,900 km put it behind the F-35's speed of 1,931 km and range of 1,500 km, respectively.[4] The Su-57 is a twin-engine plane, while the F-35 boasts a single engine. It is important to note that Russia's Su-57 suffered a crash in 2019, causing some countries to express caution.[4]

Why Invest in Su-57?

Due to a few factors, F-35 may not be ideal for India. For instance, Russia is ready to deliver the Su-57 immediately, whereas the US may face delays in delivering the aircraft to India. Additionally, the US tends to withhold technical know-how or the licensing to manufacture its aircraft, which isn't an issue with Russia. Russia is willing to transfer the technology and license to produce the stealth fighter in India.[1] In contrast, Washington might restrict spare parts provision, potentially weakening India's defense preparedness. The maintenance cost of the F-35 might reach a staggering $1.5 trillion during the aircraft's lifetime, causing many to question its cost-effectiveness.

Alternatives: Indigenous Stealth Fighter

Colonel Sirohi also mentioned the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The AMCA is still in development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and remains on paper at this stage. The AMCA, a single-seat, twin-engine, fifth-generation stealth aircraft, isn't expected to be ready for production for another ten years due to testing and certification requirements.[1] With immediate threats from China and Pakistan, purchasing the Su-57 and focusing on indigenous stealth fighter development could be the best choice for India.

In summary, South Asia's defense landscape necessitates modern stealth fighters to counteract various threats. The F-35 presents clear advantages, such as superior stealth, advanced avionics, and network-centric capabilities. However, its higher cost, limited customization, and stricter US policies could deter potential buyers like India. On the other hand, the Su-57 offers cost-effectiveness, super maneuverability, and customization flexibility, making it an attractive proposal for India. Ultimately, India must decide based on factors such as cost efficiency, strategic flexibility, and technological superiority.
