Westnetz Launches Germany's First Hydrogen Pipeline Project
Westnetz GmbH, Germany's leading distribution network operator, has initiated the HydroNet project, aiming to convert an existing 11-kilometer natural gas pipeline to 100% hydrogen in the Sauerland region. This marks the first such project in Germany.
The HydroNet project, set to begin soon after receiving funding confirmation from the federal government in October 2024, is a regional island solution. It involves production, transport, and use of hydrogen within the project area. The existing pipeline, built using hydrogen-compatible materials, can transport 100% hydrogen without restrictions, eliminating the need for conversion.
Westnetz, active in the H2vorOrt initiative, is driving the hydrogen ramp-up in distribution networks nationwide. The project consortium comprises 21 partners, with an investment volume of 75 million euros, including 29 million from Westnetz and 18 million from the Federal Ministry of Economics. The project aims to create a transparent blueprint for replication elsewhere. The timeline includes bringing network connections at industrial customers online in 2026, with the entire infrastructure ready by 2028 and the project ending in 2029.
Westnetz's HydroNet project, starting soon after funding confirmation, is a significant step towards a hydrogen future. The 11-kilometer pipeline conversion in the Sauerland region, the first of its kind in Germany, is expected to be ready by 2028. The project, involving 21 partners and an investment of 75 million euros, is set to provide a blueprint for future hydrogen projects.
