Watch out for AI, advisory cautions scholars

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making waves in various sectors, including medicine, manufacturing, finance, agriculture, and education. This transformation is particularly notable in social studies education, where AI is being hailed for its potential to make teaching more engaging and transformative, shaping students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and responsible citizens in the digital world.

The Social Studies Educationists Association of Nigeria (SOSAN) is at the forefront of this revolution. Their 41st National Conference, themed 'Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Transformative Social Security Education in Nigeria in the 21st Century,' is currently underway in Nsukka, Enugu State.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Professor Simon Ortuanya, praised the conference for its timely theme, highlighting the crucial role of AI in transforming social security education to meet contemporary challenges. Professor Romanus Ezeokonkwo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, represented Professor Ortuanya at the conference.

Professor Christian Ezeibe, the Dean of the Department of Students Affairs at UNN, believes that AI can transform teaching, learning, and all aspects of life. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) led by Professor Okechukwu Nwaubani did a commendable job in organising the event, emphasising the importance of leveraging AI for transformation, equity, justice, and responsible citizenship.

The National President of SOSAN, Professor Abdulraheem Yusuf, stated that AI has permeated every facet of the economy, especially in education. He emphasised that AI is not intended to replace humans but to amplify their potential.

The conference is significant for its relevance to the promotion of ICT in teaching social studies. SOSAN is committed to building and sustaining a strong and stable Nigeria through the teaching and learning of social studies in schools. The outcome of the conference will help to empower educators and prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.

Professor Ortuanya advised scholars to exercise caution in their application of AI, acknowledging its potential adverse effects when negatively applied. Despite this, the general sentiment at the conference is one of excitement and anticipation for the transformative potential of AI in social studies education. The conference continues to empower educators and prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.
