Veo 3 Challenges Chinese Dominance in Mobile AI Apps

The latest edition of a16z's Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps has revealed a shift in the mobile AI app landscape, with Veo 3 becoming the first US model to challenge Chinese dominance. Meanwhile, Google made a strong showing on the web list, and Grok experienced rapid growth.

Veo 3, an American model, has broken the trend of Chinese dominance in mobile AI apps, ranking first in the US. On the web list, Google placed four products, with Gemini securing the second spot behind ChatGPT. Notably, Grok has surged to fourth place on the web and 23rd on mobile, amassing over 20 million monthly active users in less than a year.

The mobile list welcomed 14 new entries, partly due to app store measures against 'ChatGPT copies'. However, the web list saw only 11 new names, indicating market stabilization. No company has appeared in all published top 50 lists of web-based AI applications over the past five years. Chinese apps continue to dominate mobile, with 22 out of 50 coming from China, while three represent the web top 20.

Lovable and Replit have made their debut on the web list in the 'Vibe Coding' category. Among the 'All Stars' - companies that have survived all five rankings - five use proprietary models, while seven use models from other providers. This edition shows market consolidation in AI apps.

The fifth edition of a16z's Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps highlights shifts in the market, with Veo 3 challenging Chinese dominance on mobile and Google making a strong web presence. Grok's rapid growth and the stabilization of the web list indicate a maturing market for AI apps.
