Vattenfall's Nordlicht project, located on our website, to receive certification from TÜV SÜD.
In the bustling waters of the German North Sea, two upcoming wind farms - Nordlicht 1 and 2 - are taking shape, located a mere 85 kilometers north of the island of Borkum. These offshore wind power projects, slated for completion in 2028, will boast a combined installed capacity of 1.6 GW, a significant contribution to Germany's renewable energy goals.
The project certification for Nordlicht 1 and 2 will adhere to the stringent standards of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). TÜV SÜD, a globally recognised organisation, will oversee the manufacturing, assembly, transportation, installation, and commissioning of the wind turbines. After completion, project certificates will be issued for both wind farms.
The wind turbines for these farms will consist of 112 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, with 68 being installed during the first phase, construction of which is scheduled to commence in 2026. TUVA SUED, another key player in this project, will be responsible for the installation of these turbines.
The development of these wind farms is a significant step towards reducing carbon footprint by transitioning away from fossil fuels. While specific figures for carbon footprint reduction are not provided, offshore wind farms like Nordlicht 1 and 2 are crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by harnessing wind energy to generate electricity instead of relying on carbon-intensive energy sources.
In addition to this, the use of low-emission steel for turbine towers will further reduce the carbon footprint of the Nordlicht wind farms by 16%.
