Users of Windows, beware: Microsoft advises against updating your computers as 200 million devices may be at risk.

Windows users are facing a significant cybersecurity challenge as the deadline for the official retirement of Windows 10 approaches on October 14. According to Consumer Reports, between 200 and 400 million users could be vulnerable to cyber attacks, with more than 600 million still using Windows 10.

Microsoft has stated that the Windows 11 minimum system requirements remain unchanged. However, for those who do not opt for the Extended Security Updates (ESU), the options are limited. Users can either upgrade to Windows 11 or consider recycling or trading in their old PCs.

Microsoft has recommended users in countries without the trade-in program to find a recycling service in their region. In Germany, Microsoft partners with local authorized recycling organizations to offer recycling or replacement programs for old Windows 10 PCs that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.

Windows Latest has spotted Microsoft's recommendation for users to recycle or trade-in their Windows 10 PCs if they can't be upgraded to Windows 11. The link provided leads to the Microsoft Store Online Trade-in Program, although it may not exist in some countries, and the link won't open in such cases.

If a user has installed Windows 11 on a device not meeting Windows 11 system requirements, they are advised to roll back to Windows 10 immediately. The "Enroll Now" button for the Windows 10 ESU is rolling out but hasn't reached all Windows 10 users yet. The take-up of the Extended Security Updates is not yet known.

Consumer Reports accuses Microsoft of hypocrisy for arguing that Windows 11 is an essential upgrade to boost cybersecurity while restricting PC upgrades and charging consumers for extensions. Forbes has reported an emergency update for Google Chrome users, with attacks underway, adding to the concerns about cybersecurity.

Users can trade-in their Windows 10 PC for a specific value or recycle it. Microsoft is encouraging users with PCs that can't be upgraded to Windows 11 to recycle or trade-in their old PCs. It's crucial for Windows 10 users to stay informed and take necessary steps to protect their devices and data as the retirement deadline approaches.
