University of Florida Responds to IT Network Intrusion

The University of Florida has informed approximately 7,500 individuals about an IT network intrusion that was discovered in January 2024. The university swiftly addressed the intrusion and has since been investigating its impact and implementing additional security measures.

The intrusion involved unauthorized access to some email accounts and SharePoint files. The earliest known unauthorized access to the university's Microsoft Office 365 environment occurred on 17 May 2023. It appears that the University's Solar Car Laboratory infrastructure may have been used in connection with the incident.

To protect the privacy and security of its community, the university has been in regular contact with the NSW Information and Privacy Commission, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), and NSW Police. An injunction from the NSW Supreme Court has been granted to prevent access, use, transmission, and publication of any data related to the incident.

The university has taken several steps to secure its network and prevent further unauthorized access. Monitoring and scanning indicate that the preventive measures taken as part of the incident response have been successful in preventing any further unauthorized access.

Notifications to individuals affected by the intrusion have been sent via telephone call, email, or both. No threats have been received to disclose any private information accessed during the incident, and the university has not received any demands in exchange for maintaining privacy.

The university encourages all members of its community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. They are committed to transparency and will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
