Unidentified Drones Disrupt Munich Airport, Brandenburg Sees 26% Increase in Sightings
Unidentified drones caused disruption at Munich airport over two days, with similar incidents reported in Denmark. In Brandenburg, authorities have registered a significant increase in drone sightings, with 84 cases this year alone, mostly over military sites and industrial areas.
The Brandenburg police have been dealing with unauthorized drone flights since 2023, when they recorded 120 sightings. This year, they have spotted 84 drones of unknown origin, a 26% increase from 2024. Most of these drones were seen hovering over military facilities (35 cases), with some also spotted over BER airport and industrial plants.
The authorities have not identified the operators behind these flights. While private use is possible, there is no evidence linking these incidents to foreign state actors or intelligence services. The Brandenburg Interior Ministry and police are handling detection and defense, but no specific agency or actor has been confirmed responsible. Similar drone alarms have been reported in Denmark and previously in Schleswig-Holstein, over a shipyard, a clinic, and a power plant.
The increase in unauthorized drone flights in Brandenburg is a cause for concern, with the ministry emphasizing the importance of countering illegal drone activities. The lack of identification of the operators behind these flights underscores the need for enhanced surveillance and regulation to ensure public safety and security.
