UK Start-up Viridi Launches CO2-Based Cleaning Ingredient, Vireya
UK-based tech start-up Viridi has launched a revolutionary ingredient for cleaning products, Vireya, using captured carbon dioxide as a feedstock. Early assessments indicate a significant reduction in product carbon footprint, up to 70%.
Viridi's technology, set for commercial release in 2026, avoids oil palm-derived feedstocks typically used in ingredients like sodium laureth sulphate (SLS). Instead, it converts carbon dioxide into a usable raw material, enabling manufacturers to decarbonise quickly without building new plants.
Vireya, a surface active agent, allows water molecules to spread more evenly, helping them penetrate surfaces and dirt, and rinsing off easily. This makes it an effective ingredient in soaps, shampoos, and cleaners. The technology uses a solid, reusable catalyst, making it adaptable to existing manufacturing infrastructure.
Viridi secured £3m seed-funding in 2023 from Breakthrough Energy Ventures to accelerate development and commercialisation. This investment aims to fast-track Viridi's technology into the market, helping companies stay ahead of tightening regulations.
Viridi's innovative use of captured carbon in cleaning product ingredients is set to reduce carbon footprints significantly. With commercial release targeted for 2026, this technology offers a practical solution for manufacturers looking to decarbonise quickly and cost-effectively.
