UK MoD Boosts Readiness with AI, Names Responsible AI Senior Officers
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has taken significant steps to enhance its fighting readiness through innovative AI and digital warfare technologies. This move is part of the Strategic Defence Review and is supported by a new corporate report on responsible AI use, titled 'Laying the Groundwork - Responsible AI Senior Officers' Report 2025'.
The MoD has appointed a Responsible AI Senior Officer (RAISO) in each major organisational unit. These officers, introduced following the Dependable AI JSP 936 Part 1 framework in 2024, ensure their organisations adhere to ethical principles in AI-enabled systems. The RAISO framework focuses on fairness, accountability, robustness, and human oversight.
RAISOs establish clear escalation routes for concerns related to AI system use or development. They oversee compliance with AI ethical principles and ensure appropriate safeguards are in place. The MoD's mission is to harness new technologies for operational effectiveness while upholding ethical and legal standards. Good governance is seen as fundamental to creating a societally acceptable culture of Responsible AI.
The release of the 'Laying the Groundwork' report marks the start of a longer-term process to integrate AI into Defence activities while maintaining public trust. Each major MoD organisation now has a dedicated RAISO, demonstrating the Ministry's commitment to responsible AI use and ethical innovation.
