Xpeng's Extended-Range X9 MPV Offers 430-450 km Battery Range

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng has taken a significant step forward with the regulatory filing of its extended-range version of the X9 MPV. The vehicle, which was initially launched as the company's first MPV model in China on January 1, 2024, is set to hit the market in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to Xpeng, the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version of the X9 MPV will boast a battery electric range of approximately 430 to 450 kilometers. This pure electric cruising range is before the range extender engine activates, offering impressive electric-only driving capability for a large MPV.

Several sources, including Xpeng's November 2024 tech day, indicate a battery range around 430 km. The MIIT filings and test vehicles have shown "450" badges, suggesting a 450 km pure electric range on some models or trim levels.

The EREV version of the X9 MPV is Xpeng's first super hybrid model. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by CALB and a 1.5-liter engine from Harbin Dongan Auto Engine as an extended-range engine, with a maximum power output of 110 kW.

The X9 EREV has a curb weight of 2,750 kilograms and a maximum speed of 180 kilometers per hour. A photo shared by Xpeng's CEO, Mr. He, suggests that the battery range of the X9 EREV may be 450 kilometers.

With the range extender system active, the vehicle supports up to 1,400 kilometers, making it one of the longest extended-range systems in the industry. The range extender is paired with the LFP batteries and is branded as the Kunpeng Super Range Extender system.

Xpeng is not stopping at the X9 EREV. The company is also working on a hybrid version of the G6 SUV, as indicated by spy photos. The X9 MPV currently available in China offers four variants, with starting prices ranging from RMB 359,800 ($50,100) to RMB 419,800.

The public can submit feedback on the EREV version of the X9 MPV from August 9 to 15, as it has been included in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) latest list of vehicles for public comment. This is the final major regulatory step before a vehicle can be sold in China.

With its extended-range X9 MPV, Xpeng is positioning itself as a competitive player in the electric vehicle market, offering large MPV options with strong electric-only driving capability.
