Despite none of the tested programs achieving a perfect score, the undisputed leader was Bitdefender Total Security, boasting a protection rate of an impressive 99.8%. Although it couldn't keep one out of 423 attacks at bay, its false alarm count was impressively low, managing just three missteps.

Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus, on the other hand, didn't raise any false red flags, but allowed its system to be compromised a total of three times, earning it a place among the top contenders in this category.

Antivirus heavyweights like Avast Free Antivirus and Malwarebytes Premium put up a strong fight, with only two false alarms each and excellent protection rates. However, they faltered when it came to accuracy, incurring 13.5 and 35 false alarms, respectively.

Joining Bitdefender Total Security and Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus in the winners' circle were ESET Home Security Essential, G Data Total Security, Kaspersky Premium, McAfee Total Protection, Norton Antivirus Plus, TotalAV Antivirus Pro, and VIPRE Advanced Security.

The Power of the Free Guardians

In addition to the "Advanced" award, Avira Free Antivirus and Microsoft Defender Antivirus, both offering complimentary protection, earned the three-star honor. Avira, with only three false alarms to its name, ranks among the test participants with the third-best protection. Microsoft's built-in tool, in comparison, allowed one more compromise but went easy on false red flags, blocking only two domains or downloads. Further, Defender passes on the advertisement annoyance faced by Avira Free Antivirus users.
