THW Celebrates 75 Years of Global Service and Rescue
The Bavarian Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Established on August 22, 1950, the THW was founded to protect the population from post-WWII effects and has since evolved into a federal authority with a global reach.
The THW in Bavaria is marking this significant milestone with a reception hosted by the Bavarian State Chancellery in Munich, honouring around 350 dedicated members. This volunteer force, numbering approximately 16,000, consistently devotes their free time to safeguarding the public.
Over the decades, the THW has adapted to shifting global political landscapes, expanding its competencies to include emergency supply and civil defense. It has provided technical assistance abroad, such as rebuilding infrastructure in Slovenia in 2023. Closer to home, in 2016, over 400 THW forces rescued and recovered individuals from the devastating train wreck in Bad Aibling. More recently, in 2021, Bavarian THW teams offered invaluable support during the flood disaster caused by the low pressure system 'Orinoco' in southern Bavaria.
Since its inception, the THW has procured aid goods worth over 138 million euros on behalf of the Federal Government, demonstrating its commitment to serving both domestically and internationally. As it commemorates its 75th anniversary, the THW looks back on a rich history of service and preparedness, ready to face future challenges with its skilled volunteers.
