Sony Increases Prices of PlayStation 5 Models in Response to Economic Challenges

Sony, the Japanese multinational conglomerate, has announced price increases for several PlayStation 5 models in Europe and other regions. The decision, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment, is a response to a challenging economic environment that includes factors such as inflation, supply chain costs, and possibly tariffs related to previous trade tensions.

The price for the classic PS5 with a drive remains unchanged at 550 euros in Europe and the UK. However, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, the cheaper alternative due to not having an integrated drive for game discs, has seen a price increase. In Europe, the new price for the Digital Edition is 500 euros, an increase of 50 euros from its previous price of 450 euros.

The price increase amounts to about $50 more for each PS5 model, including the Digital Edition. For example, the PS5 Digital Edition’s price rose to $499.99 in the U.S., with corresponding price increases in other markets.

In Australia, the new price for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is AU$679.95, which is approximately €410. In the UK, the new price is £389.99, which is approximately €455. In New Zealand, the new price is NZ$799.95, which is approximately €440.

Sony has attributed the price adjustment to high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. The company has also suggested that it might be trying to boost sales of the more expensive variants by increasing the prices of selected models.

Interestingly, the Blu-ray Disc drive, which can be used with both the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro, has seen a price reduction. It is now priced at 80 euros, down from 120 euros. This could be an attempt to boost sales of this accessory, as it has not been selling as well as hoped so far.

The PS5 Digital Edition is one of the most popular gaming consoles of recent years. Despite the price increase, it remains a compelling choice for gamers who prefer a digital-only experience.

Sony has commented on the decision in a blog post, acknowledging the impact on consumers but emphasizing the need to address the economic challenges facing the company and the industry. The company also noted that it continues to work towards improving the availability of PS5 consoles for customers.

This is the second price change for the PS5 Digital Edition since its launch in November 2020, as it has become 100 euros more expensive. The price increase affects only the Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5 without a drive. At this time, no information about a new PlayStation model other than the PS5 Pro has been provided.
