Tesla's Shanghai Mega factory exceeds production of its 1,000th Megapack

In a remarkable feat of engineering and production, Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory has produced its 1,000th Megapack energy storage system, just six months after the factory's official launch.

The Shanghai Megafactory, located in the Lingang area of Pudong, Shanghai, marked its beginning on May 23, 2024, making it Tesla's first energy storage project outside the US. The factory primarily produces the Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, for global markets.

The first batch of Megapacks was shipped overseas on March 21, 2025, with the 1,000th unit destined for Europe. The Megapack, resembling a shipping container and weighing over 38 tons, boasts an energy storage capacity that can power 50,000 households in Shanghai for a year.

With an annual production capacity of 10,000 units, the Shanghai Megafactory will have an energy storage capacity of nearly 40 GWh. This giant power bank is instrumental in stabilising the grid and preventing power outages.

A single Megapack can store about 3,900 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the battery capacity of 62 Model 3 rear-wheel-drive vehicles. This innovative technology is currently deployed in over 65 countries and regions worldwide.

In addition to the Megapack production, the Shanghai Megafactory also produces the Model 3 and Model Y in China. Tesla's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and electric vehicles continues to expand, with the Shanghai Megafactory playing a significant role in this global effort.
