Tesla's Home Charging Station Secures Top Position for a Fifth Consecutive Year

Tesla tops J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle (EV) Home Charging Study in home EV charging satisfaction yet again, particularly in the Level 2 permanently mounted charger category, where it earned a score of 776 out of 1,000 points. Emporia and Wallbox ranked second and third respectively...

Tesla's Home Charging Station Secures Top Position for a Fifth Consecutive Year

In the recently released J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, Tesla emerged as the frontrunner in home electric vehicle (EV) charging satisfaction. This is largely due to Tesla's offering of the most reliable and expansive charging network, with strong ease of use and minimal failed charging visits.

The study, which surveyed over 10,000 owners of battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from model years 2019 to 2025, found that Tesla Superchargers scored 709 points on a 1,000-point scale, outperforming competitors like Electrify America and EVgo. Tesla's home charger, the Tesla Wall Connector, also ranked highest in the Level 2 permanently mounted charger category, scoring 776 out of 1000 points.

However, the study also highlighted several challenges impacting overall home charging satisfaction. Issues with charging speed and availability, cost of charging, and clarity in payments, as well as the ease of use and finding charging stations, continue to affect user satisfaction.

On the West Coast and in the Northeast, EV owners expressed lower satisfaction with the cost of charging, due to higher prices in these regions. App and Wi-Fi issues account for nearly one-third of complaints about Level 2 wall-mounted chargers, with an average of 39 problems per 100 units reported.

Despite Tesla's lead, other networks are just beginning to catch up, meaning users experience a wider range of satisfaction levels depending on infrastructure and location. Brent Gruber, executive director of EV intelligence at J.D. Power, noted that rising electricity costs and connectivity problems are negatively impacting home charging satisfaction.

Slower charging speeds led to a significant drop in satisfaction, with a 141-point decrease compared to owners who did not report such issues. Despite these challenges, the study noted that Level 2 wall-mounted units still provide the best experience, but they also come with the most problems.

Emporia and Wallbox followed Tesla in the Level 2 permanently mounted charger category, scoring 763 and 756, respectively. The Tesla Wall Connector was noted for its ease of use, with the process involving grabbing the handle, walking up to the charge port, and pressing a button to open the port lid before plugging in the charger and walking away.

In summary, Tesla’s blend of reliable hardware, extensive network coverage, and user-friendly experience drives its top ranking in home EV charging satisfaction. However, widespread challenges like pricing transparency, charger availability, and infrastructure reliability still affect overall satisfaction across the EV charging ecosystem.

  1. As other networks begin to match Tesla's performance, smart-home devices and gadgets using technology like electric vehicle charging stations could see more variations in user satisfaction depending on infrastructure and location.
  2. The Tesla Wall Connector, a leader in the Level 2 permanently mounted charger category, combines technology with simplicity, offering easy-to-use features such as a handle, charge port, and button, making it a standout choice among gadgets in the smart-home devices category.
