Swelling Tesla Sales in Malaysia and Hong Kong

Tesla, the American electric vehicle (EV) giant, is experiencing a significant shift in its sales dynamics across global markets. In Asia-Pacific, the company is witnessing strong growth, particularly in countries like Malaysia and Hong Kong, while facing declining sales in parts of Europe.

In Hong Kong, Tesla became the top brand in private vehicle registrations in May 2025, with a staggering 1,319 units registered. This success is contributing to the city's shift towards electric vehicles, as EVs made up 74.4% of all new registrations that month, with Tesla holding a 40.3% share among electric vehicles.

The Model Y, Tesla's popular SUV, is driving this growth. In Malaysia, Tesla's sales of the Model Y surged in May 2025, with a 403% increase in registrations compared to the same month last year. The new Model Y also played a critical role in Tesla's recovery in Australia, helping reduce the brand's year-to-date decline to just 27%, compared to a 58% drop at the end of April. Year-to-date, Model Y orders in Malaysia are up 37% compared to all of 2024.

High brand recognition in countries like Malaysia and Hong Kong supports Tesla’s strong market penetration in these Asia-Pacific countries. A 2024 survey shows Tesla as one of the top-known EV brands in these areas, contributing to strong local sales potential.

In contrast, Tesla's global sales fell by 13% year-over-year in Q2 2025, reflecting ongoing challenges in Europe. In Germany, Tesla registrations were down 77% year-over-year in May 2025. This downturn contrasts with Tesla’s expanding footprint in Asia.

The intense competition, market saturation, and possibly regulatory or consumer preference challenges in Europe are likely factors behind Tesla's declining sales there. In contrast, Tesla's success in Asia-Pacific markets like Malaysia and Hong Kong is primarily due to high brand awareness and demand for its Model Y, combined with successful domestic market stabilization and export growth strategies in China.

In South Korea, Tesla made a significant stride in May 2025, becoming the top-selling imported car brand. The Model Y accounted for 6,237 registrations, making it the top-selling EV and the best-selling imported vehicle overall. In fact, Tesla accounted for 30% of all new vehicle registrations in Hong Kong in May 2025, surpassing Mercedes-Benz and BMW in South Korea.

Tesla's sales in several Asia-Pacific markets, including Malaysia and Hong Kong, are experiencing strong growth. However, the company's sales in Spain, Portugal, and Sweden saw sharp drops in 2025. Despite these fluctuations, Tesla's strategic recovery efforts in China and the popularity of the Model Y in Asia-Pacific markets are likely to continue driving growth in these regions.
