The U17 submarine, which has undergone a two million euro overhaul, is now on display at the Sinsheim Technical Museum in Germany. The cost for the submarine's transport and renovation was primarily funded by admission fees and donations, according to museum director Andreas Hemmer. From May 24, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the vessel's interior.

Upon its arrival, the submarine was warmly received, with celebrations held in various cities along its transport route, evoking a World Cup-like atmosphere. The response, both within the museum and on social media, has been overwhelmingly positive, with anticipation for viewing the submarine's interior running high.

The goal of the renovation was to preserve the submarine's authenticity while making it accessible for visitors. Opening its hatches on May 24, the submarine marks the culmination of nine months of painstaking work.

"Few places in Germany offer the opportunity to explore a submarine," Hemmer noted. The museum's unique attraction extends even further, allowing visitors to look through a submarine tube to see a supersonic aircraft.

No guided tours are currently available, but Hemmer promises they will be in the future. During the press tour, Viktor Toyka, the oldest surviving former commander of the U17 crew, offered insights into life aboard the submarine. Toyka, who was part of the crew from 1973 and commanded the vessel from 1975 to 1977, expressed his satisfaction with the submarine's preservation and the knowledge that it will outlive its former crew members.

From May 24, 2025, the U17 submarine can be visited at the Sinsheim Technical Museum. Up to 30 people can enter the restricted area simultaneously. Visitors are also free to walk beneath the submarine, with the price included in the museum's admission fee.

The renovated U17 submarine, a rare gem showcasing a piece of general-news history, is set to open its hatches for visitors on May 24, 2025, at the Sinsheim Technical Museum. This technological marvel, preserving the lifestyle of its former crew members, offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to explore its interior and even walk beneath the vessel, all included in the museum's admission fee.
