The Satoshi Nakamoto statue, a cultural symbol for the global crypto community, was vandalized and recovered from Lake Lugano in Switzerland on Saturday. The statue, created by Italian artist and Bitcoin advocate Valentina Picozzi, was unveiled in October 2024 as part of an event jointly organized by Tether and the City of Lugano[1][2][3].

Only the feet of the statue, welded at two points, remained attached after the incident. No new information about the timeline for the repair or reconstruction of the statue was provided.

The statue, which took 21 months to plan and build, was installed by the Satoshigallery art collective. In response to the statue being retrieved, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino posted a heart emoji, while Gabor Gurbacs, Founder of blockchain rewards platform Pointsville, expressed anger and disbelief about the vandalism.

Satoshigallery had offered a reward of 0.1 BTC (over $11,000) for the recovery of the statue. In a statement, they said, "You can steal our symbol, but never our souls." No new information about the value of the reward offered was provided.

Bitcoin advocate Gritto speculated that drunk partygoers celebrating Swiss National Day may have caused the damage to the statue. However, no new information about the identity of the vandals was provided, and authorities believe the statue was vandalized rather than stolen.

No new information about the impact of the vandalism on the global crypto community was provided. The current condition of the statue and the progress of the investigation into the vandalism were also not disclosed. Satoshigallery did not comment on the location where the statue was found.

Despite the vandalism, the crypto community continues to rally around the symbolic representation of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. The statue's resilience serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the crypto community, even in the face of adversity.
