Starlink Introduces $10 Emergency and Weekend Travel Backup Plan for Its Services
SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service has made a significant change to its offerings with the discontinuation of the popular Roam 10GB plan. The low-cost plan, which provided 10GB of high-speed data for $10 per month, was designed for backup home internet and recreational travelers using the Starlink Mini dish.
However, as of August 2025, the Roam 10GB plan is no longer available for new activations; current subscribers may keep it only until they cancel or switch to other modes. The discontinuation of the Roam 10GB plan marks a shift in Starlink's approach to low-cost data plans.
The Roam service allows usage anywhere with active coverage, which typically applies to the wide Starlink satellite network coverage including many countries where Starlink operates. However, specific country-by-country activation or roaming details are not explicitly described in recent updates.
In response to the discontinuation of the Roam 10GB plan, Starlink has introduced a new $5/month Standby Mode. This Standby Mode replaces the previous free pause option for Starlink service and provides unlimited data at reduced speeds (around 500 Kbps). It is targeted at customers who want to keep their dish connected minimally during inactive periods (e.g., RV storage) without paying full monthly fees.
The activation process for Roam plans or switching between plans is managed via the Starlink app or the website dashboard, where users can select their plan or enable Standby Mode. After discontinuing the Roam 10GB plan, users cannot reactivate it, pushing them toward more expensive Roam data plans or Standby Mode if they want to pause regular service without fully cancelling.
This change has generated mixed reactions from the user community, with some expressing disappointment at the loss of the low-cost Roam 10GB plan, while others appreciate the introduction of the more affordable Standby Mode.
For travelers or mobile users, Starlink now offers more expensive Roam plans or the Standby Mode as a low-bandwidth alternative. The Roam 10GB plan, which supported in-motion use and was suitable for off-grid travel, occasional internet use during emergencies or travel, and light use during emergencies or weekend travel, is no longer an option.
