Starlink Granted Final Authorization for Launch in Bangladesh
Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet service, has officially launched in Bangladesh as of early August 2025, providing high-speed, low-latency internet access nationwide, including remote and underserved areas such as flood-prone char lands, hills, and coastal zones.
The official launch took place around August 6, 2025, marking a significant milestone in bridging connectivity gaps across the country. Starlink offers a satellite internet hardware kit for easy installation, enabling reliable internet without reliance on ground infrastructure.
Monthly subscription packages start at about 4,200 Bangladeshi taka (~$35 USD), with a one-time hardware setup fee of approximately 47,000 taka. The service is expected to benefit sectors like remote education, telemedicine, disaster management, and agriculture where reliable connectivity is critical.
The launch of Starlink in Bangladesh follows demo services conducted earlier in the year but is distinct from the official commercial rollout which began recently. This launch is a response to the demand for reliable internet services, particularly during times of political unrest.
Prior to the official launch, initial trial runs of Starlink in Bangladesh were conducted using foreign gateways. However, for full commercial operations, the establishment of local ground infrastructure, including broadband gateways and Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), is necessary, as stipulated by Bangladeshi telecommunications policy.
The regulatory preparations for Starlink's launch moved at an unprecedented pace. Starlink swiftly submitted its application and fees to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) following the publication of guidelines for Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) Satellite Services in March. A dedicated BTRC committee found Starlink's application documents to be in full compliance, recommending the license at record speed. The license was signed off by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday.
Starlink's satellite-based service can maintain connectivity regardless of local power conditions, making it an essential tool for disaster-prone and energy-challenged areas. Bangladesh is the second country in South Asia to approve Starlink's services, following Sri Lanka.
According to SpaceX Vice President for Global Engagement, Lauren Dreyer, the technical launch of Starlink in Bangladesh is almost ready. The launch of Starlink in Bangladesh is a significant development for the country's internet infrastructure.
