Meta Introduces Meta Ray-Ban Display: Smart Glasses for the Future
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is entering the world of smart glasses with the launch of their new product, the Meta Ray-Ban Display. The glasses, set to be available in the US from late September, are designed to display text messages, photos, and videos, making them a potential competitor in the growing market of augmented reality wearables.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display is controlled by a wristband that can detect even the smallest movements. During a demonstration at the Meta Connect event, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off the glasses' capabilities by writing letters on a surface with his fingers, which were then converted into words in a text message using the wristband.
Besides Meta, competitors in the smart glasses market include tech giants like Apple, Samsung, and Berlin-based startup L’Atitude 52°N. Apple is reportedly preparing its own smart glasses, expected to be released around 2026, while Samsung is already active in this field. L’Atitude 52°N differentiates itself by focusing on practical features, robust design, and unique functions like a walkie-talkie via Bluetooth Mesh.
Google has also showcased prototypes of similar glasses with no known release date. However, Apple has only released a headset with camera capabilities so far. The glasses worn by Zuckerberg on the Meta Connect stage are bulkier than regular frames and stand out with noticeably thicker temples.
The display integrated into the right lens of the Meta Ray-Ban Display has a resolution of 600 by 600 pixels. Meta claims a battery life of up to six hours for the glasses. The starting price for the Meta Ray-Ban Display is $799.
It's worth noting that the performance of Meta's glasses in daily life is yet to be determined, as demonstrated struggles occurred during video calls and AI guidance. Nonetheless, the Meta Ray-Ban Display offers a promising step forward in the development of smart glasses technology.
As the smart glasses market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how companies like Meta, Apple, Samsung, and L’Atitude 52°N shape the future of this innovative technology.
