Singapore-based B Lab appoints new CEO
In a significant development for the B Corp movement in Singapore, Brian Selby has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of B Lab Singapore. The role had been vacant for 18 months following the departure of Amelie Remond at the end of 2023.
Selby, who brings over three decades of experience in senior corporate roles, is well-equipped to lead B Lab Singapore. Notably, he was a former executive with General Electric (GE), where he led GE’s hydro-electric business across Asia. Prior to this, he was involved in GE's plastics and chemicals businesses, and began his career as a lawyer.
As the entity overseeing the B Corp certification scheme in Singapore, B Lab plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability and responsible business practices in the region. With Selby's extensive experience in large-scale business operations and sustainability projects, he is poised to champion the B Corp movement more effectively within Singapore and across the wider region.
B Lab Singapore has set a target of certifying 100 companies by 2025, and the organization aims to enter its next phase of growth with Selby at the helm. The leadership, including co-founder and board member Caroline Leow, has emphasized a commitment to continuing the advancement of B Lab’s core values and ensuring strong governance, alignment with its global mission, and growth of the B Corp community in Singapore.
The B Corp certification is one of the toughest sustainability certifications to attain, with only a third of firms that apply getting certified. Despite this, the B Corp movement in Singapore has seen a steady growth, with 4 new companies certified since last August. Other recently certified businesses include online media agency Jolt Digital and sustainability consultancy Global Green Connect, led by Christina Lee.
However, B Lab Singapore has experienced high staff turnover in the past 18 months, with two business development executives leaving within this period. Selby is expected to focus on stabilizing the organization after a period of leadership change and high staff turnover.
Caroline Seow, co-founder and board member of B Lab Singapore, will continue to support the organization in its mission to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices, and expand the influence of the B Corp movement across Asia.
