Russian Firm Tekhkrim Launches Anti-Drone Ammunition for AK-74s
Russian company Tekhkrim has introduced innovative anti-drone ammunition, making it commercially available in Russia. The new ammunition, priced at 97 rubles ($1.2) per round, is designed to increase hit probability on small, fast-moving targets like FPV drones.
The ammunition features seven 4.5mm (.177 caliber) hard cast birdshot pellets encapsulated in zinc-plated two-piece precut discarding steel sabots. This design allows it to cycle the action of rifles like AK-74s and AK-12s, with a muzzle velocity of 650-700 meters per second.
At 35 meters, the pellets penetrate a 20mm pine board and a 1.2mm aluminum sheet, and at 50 meters, they penetrate a 12mm plywood board. This makes it effective against small suicide drones, which have proven deadly on modern battlefields. The projectiles can also be purchased separately for 44 rubles ($0.55) each, designed to be used with standard ammunition's powder charges.
Tekhkrim's goal is to increase hit probability on these fast-moving targets, addressing a gap in current anti-drone measures. Previously, soldiers in the Russo-Ukrainian war resorted to DIY anti-drone ammunition made with 5.45x39 ammo and BB pellets.
Tekhkrim's new anti-drone ammunition offers a practical solution to counter small, agile drones. With its proven penetration capabilities and compatibility with standard rifles, it could potentially enhance the capabilities of ground forces in Russia and beyond.
