Russia Uses AI Videos to Manipulate Grieving Families in Ukraine

Russian authorities in occupied Ukrainian territories are exploiting families' grief by distributing manipulated videos, portraying missing relatives as alive or involved in staged scenarios. These videos, often created using AI detectors, are spreading rapidly on platforms like Telegram and VKontakte, further complicating the search for truth and justice.

The Russian regime is employing emotional manipulation to turn tragedy into propaganda. AI-generated videos depict deceased soldiers smiling, speaking, or walking, presenting their deaths as noble and divinely justified. Families who never receive their relatives' bodies are offered these artificial fabrications as a substitute for truth.

Earlier reports indicated that thousands of AI-driven Telegram accounts were flooding local channels in occupied territories with coordinated Kremlin propaganda, simulating pro-Russian consensus. The Kremlin and its supporters use these videos to sanctify aggression and promote a cult of sacrifice, portraying Russia's war as righteous. The clips cost around $60 to produce, with $30 for animation and another $30 for synthetic voice simulation. This technology replaces genuine grief with artificial closure, suppressing questions about responsibility for the soldiers' deaths.

The use of AI-generated videos to manipulate families' grief in occupied Ukrainian territories raises serious concerns about the Russian regime's propaganda tactics. While these videos may provide temporary solace, they hinder the pursuit of truth and justice for the families affected by the conflict.
