Robot Icon of Anime Fame, the Giant Walking Gundam, to Debut in Japan in October (2020)

Unleash the robot revolution! Japan's about to debut a jaw-dropping, 18-meter tall, 25-ton goliath—the real-life Gundam—on October 1, 2020. Take a gander at Yokohama’s bustling port city; that’s where this beast will strut its stuff!

GUNDAM Factory Yokohama's bringing the fight—and Japan's creative might—to life. Ready to witness pure Gundam glory? Hang tight, pals, because soon enough, this colossal warrior will take center stage!

Drawing inspiration from the iconic Gundam series of films, shows, and games, this mechanical nightmare is 59 feet high and packing some serious heft. Check out this mind-blowing video from back in December, showing scaffolding construction and the massive hand making a strong fist.

Curious about its mobility? Fear not! The University of Tokyo cooked up a computer simulation, proving that the metallic monster will—if everything goes according to plan—sashay and lumber its way across the city.

Alas, this Iron Giant won't be smashing kaiju any time soon, but hey, every little step counts, right? And speaking of steps, they even created a miniature replica of the Gundam, including its docking facility.

Oh, and by the way, this robotic Armageddon will not be controlled by a human pilot. Instead, it'll be remotely commandeered, with spectators hanging out safely in a nearby building.

Starting from July to August 2020, Saturdays and Sundays, you can catch a glimpse of the Gundam's facilities at GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA. Plus, you'll get a chance to ogle at the "Special Observatory Deck at 'GUNDAM-DOCK TOWER.'" Tickets to witness the final Gundam will go on sale in July.

Update: The Gundam Stumbles Onto the Scene

In September 2020, the full-size Gundam replica slowly took its first steps in Yokohama. Sure, it was more like a tiny shuffle, but considering its 60-foot height and 24-ton weight, one can't help but be impressed!

See the footage here. The videos—speeded up for your viewing pleasure—showcase the massive mech exiting its enclosure, kneeling down, and raising its hand. Of course, they say in the video, the frame is now complete, and the ambitious project is finally underway!

The colossal Gundam, inspired by Japan's renowned series, will not only showcase advanced technology but also artificial-intelligence, as it will be remotely controlled instead of human-piloted. In the realm of gadgets, the miniature replica of the Gundam is another example of the country's creative might, available for public viewing at GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA.
