The Roborock Saros Z7 is a unique vacuum and mop bot equipped with an extendable gripper arm, the OmniGrip, that's still in its infancy. With a hefty price tag of around 1700 euros, does this robot offer more than just a fancy gadget?

Unlike typical cleaning bots that dance around obstacles on the floor, the Saros Z7 takes a different approach, using its gripper arm to shuffle things like socks, shoes, and whatnot, out of its path. But can it make spaces more than just spotless—tidy?

Sleek and Slender Design

This bot is slender enough to scoot under low furniture, making it unassumingly packed with a secret holder for the arm. It tucks away under a flap on top and pops out only when needed.

Like other high-end cleaning bots, the Saros Z7 parks in a docking station to recharge, refill water, and dry its mop pads. Plus, the station stores the pads when not in use, keeping them fresh at around 80 degrees.

Navigating the Landscape

Setting up the robot through the user-friendly app is a breeze, and it takes some time to map the rooms. Once mapped, it navigates well, leaving hardly any reachable spots untouched. It also shrewdly recognizes the type of floor it's on and adjusts its cleaning technique accordingly.

The robot can independently overcome obstacles up to 4 cm high, like thresholds, when changing rooms. It can store multiple maps with multiple levels, allowing users to edit rooms, designate no-go zones, or virtually place furniture.

Versatile and Feature-Rich

The robot offers a range of features: it can take photos of obstacles or pets on request, use its camera to remotely control the bot via a smartphone, or make video calls to play with your pup. It's also a top-notch vacuum cleaner, especially on smooth floors and in corners.

The Grasp Situation

So far, as a suction and wiping robot, the Saros Z7 does admirably. However, the integrated gripper is still a work in progress, leaving plenty of room for improvement. Roborock itself admits that the OmniGrip can only recognize a limited selection of lightweight objects, such as socks, sandals, or crumpled paper[3]. In practical testing, these objects were recognized and picked up only occasionally.

The robot occasionally deposits collected items in the designated area, but it's an iffy outcome. Manual intervention is needed to pick up objects or use the remote control to command the bot to do so.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Roborock Saros Z7 is an impressive suction and wiping bot. However, despite its advanced features, its integrated gripper is still in need of refinement. It's recommended to hold off on purchasing until the OmniGrip becomes a more reliable and efficient tool[3].
