The platform has permanently banned 22-year-old YouTuber Schlep, who has been exposing alleged child predators on Roblox.
Schlep's ban has sparked outrage among many users and advocates, who see it as hypocritical and prioritizing optics over child safety. Critics argue that Roblox is suppressing a valuable protector and whistleblower rather than effectively addressing predator issues.
Schlep, who has been part of Roblox since childhood and still considers it a platform he loves despite its flaws, claims that he avoids initiating sexual conversations, reports predators promptly, and has repeatedly tried to work with Roblox but has never been told what the "proper channels" are.
In a cease-and-desist letter, Roblox accuses Schlep of engaging in simulated child endangerment conversations, sharing or soliciting personally identifiable information, and directing users to move conversations off-platform to platforms like Discord. The company argues that vigilante actions such as Schlep's can mimic predator behavior by impersonating minors and lead users off-platform, which is against their terms of use.
Notable YouTubers like MoistCr1TiKal, JiDeon, and KreekCraft have spoken out in support of Schlep, calling Roblox's actions "backwards" and "hypocritical." The #FreeSchlep hashtag trended on social media, with fellow creators accusing Roblox of punishing someone working to protect children rather than addressing the predator problem on the platform.
Schlep's reports of suspects have often been ignored or left unresolved, even in cases where suspects have been arrested later. In one instance, a predator known as "Nepali Incel" made threats against the Las Vegas Sphere and was later arrested by the FBI, yet remained active on Roblox. Schlep and his team have helped identify and assist in the arrest of multiple predators on Roblox.
The controversy raises questions about whether a platform on Roblox's scale can afford to dismiss independent actors who aim to protect children, and whether taking a stand against these actors ultimately does more harm than good for Roblox players. Supporters of Schlep argue that Roblox should be collaborating with independent efforts like his instead of silencing them, warning that this approach only damages trust and allows existing problems to fester.
Roblox, however, argues that Schlep's methods undermine its safety protocols and put users at greater risk. The company maintains that it has clear "proper channels" for reporting predators beyond the standard user report form and moderation tickets, but Schlep claims that these channels have not been defined clearly.
