Pferdewetten's Smash into German Betting Market: Snagging HappyBet
Retail Betting in Germany Shifts as Playtech Sells HappyBet
In a bold move to ramp up its retail betting game, Pferdewetten AG has snapped up HappyBet from Playtech. This deal marks the start of Playtech's journey to leave the consumer-facing gambling market and focus solely on B2B operations.
The acquisition is set to rebrand HappyBet's shops under the Sportwetten.de banner. On the other hand, HappyBet's franchise partners can carry on business as usual, provided they agree to terms negotiated by NetX Betting, a Pferdewetten subsidiary. The transition is subject to approval from German state regulators.
Financial Headwinds Prompted the Sale
HappyBet's 2024 report painted a grim picture, revealing an adjusted EBITDA loss of €11.8 million despite a slight revenue bump. The struggle to turn a profit forced Playtech to cut ties with Austria and contemplate shuttering its German arm. But with a buyer on the horizon, any remaining assets untouched by Pferdewetten will be shut down.
Pferdewetten expects to apply the brakes to HappyBet's red ink, hoping for a €1 million EBITDA boost once the shops are integrated. CEO Pierre Hofer anticipates a "mid-double-digit number" of shops to be seamlessly integrated into their network in the next three months, netting an extra €7 million in annual revenue.
The acquisition comes with over 600 self-service betting terminals and in-shop systems, which will be melded into Pferdewetten's retail structure and lined up with their Sportwetten.de offering.
Pferdewetten to Dominate German Betting Scene
This strategic move bolsters Pferdewetten's clout in the German sports betting arena and expands its reach across the country. With HappyBet's retail network falling firmly under Pferdewetten's wing, they stand to gain more partners and strengthen their retail presence.
