Household Energy Generation Contributes to Grid Stability and Cost Savings, Study Suggests

A report by TransnetBW has suggested that households who generate their own power, such as through solar panels, heat pumps, or home storage, can significantly optimize their behavior for market efficiency, leading to cost savings and improved stability for the energy system.

If half of these households were to act in a market-oriented manner, at least nine gigawatts of hydrogen-capable power plants more than currently planned would be needed, according to co-study leader Georgios Savvidis. This estimation is even made under average weather conditions.

The study further emphasized the impact of weather extremes on the grid's stability. For instance, the fluctuation in wind power generation in Germany can vary by up to plus or minus 15 percent compared to the long-term average, potentially representing a difference of up to 150 terawatt hours per year. This amount equals about 12 percent of the German electricity demand expected for 2045, highlighting the significance of this variation.

Even with normal weather conditions, the capacities assumed in the grid development plan would not be sufficient to ensure a continuous power supply in 2050, the study concluded. In extreme weather conditions – such as widespread drought or an unusually cold winter with 42 frost days – the deficit could increase, potentially leading to power outages. Specifically, this means that in 2050, on about two days, not all customers could be supplied with electricity at all times, said study leader Massimo Moser. In such cases, the deficit could double if half of the households with their own generation did not behave optimally for the market.

The study suggested that more cross-border connections in the European power grid could prevent severe power outages by saving up to 18 billion euros per year from 2050.

Despite the challenges faced by grid operators, Baden-Württemberg's Minister-President, Winfried Kretschmann, reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding widespread and prolonged power outages.

Key strategies for optimizing household behavior include maximizing self-consumption, using Smart Energy Management Systems, load shifting and peak management, and employing dynamic optimization techniques. These strategies contribute to system efficiency by balancing the grid, reducing transmission losses, and supporting renewable integration.

By implementing these strategies, households can achieve substantial bill reductions, improve energy system efficiency, and support the transition to a more sustainable energy future. These benefits could result in billions of euros in avoided infrastructure costs by 2050 across Europe and Germany, as suggested by various estimates and case studies.
