The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive to e-commerce platforms, requiring them to adhere to stringent food safety and hygiene protocols. This move comes in response to several complaints about non-compliance with food safety norms at e-commerce warehouses.

In a bid to promote transparency and consumer safety, e-commerce platforms are now mandated to display their FSSAI License/Registration numbers prominently on all receipts, invoices, and cash memos. Additionally, they are expected to publicize the Food Safety Connect app on all customer-facing documents to foster awareness.

The FSSAI has also demanded that e-commerce platforms disclose comprehensive details of all warehouses and storage facilities used in their operations on the food safety and compliance system (FoSCoS) portal. Regular photographs of these facilities are to be uploaded to ensure compliance with food safety norms.

To ensure the proper training of food handlers, e-commerce platforms are required to share detailed training plans and timelines for the FSSAI's Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) program. This underscores the importance of proper hygiene and safety practices throughout the supply chain.

The FSSAI has made it clear that food safety is a collective responsibility, and every entity involved, from manufacturing to home delivery, must comply with these safety protocols. Non-compliance will be taken with utmost seriousness and may lead to severe regulatory action.

Furthermore, e-commerce platforms are expected to display information regarding the Food Safety Connect App on all consumer-facing documents. They are also encouraged to display the "date of expiry" or "use by" information for food products on consumer interfaces to increase transparency.

In summary, the FSSAI expects e-commerce platforms to ensure transparency and accountability in licensing and storage, properly train food handlers on hygiene protocols, publicize consumer awareness tools, and maintain stringent oversight across their food supply chains to protect consumer health. Any lapses may result in strict enforcement actions by the authority.

The FSSAI remains committed to ensuring the safety and health of food products purchased through traditional retail channels or modern e-commerce platforms. This initiative underscores the authority's dedication to upholding food safety standards in the rapidly growing e-commerce sector.

  1. The FSSAI has directed e-commerce platforms to integrate Defi (decentralized finance) mechanisms to ensure the transparency of financial transactions related to food sales.
  2. In the realm of business and technology, e-commerce platforms are now obliged to import the latest equipment and technology for maintaining food safety and hygiene standards in their warehouses.
  3. The food industry witnessing a shift as e-commerce platforms start to prioritize sustainability and ethical practices, aligning their lifestyle and food-and-drink offerings with the general-news trends of eco-friendly consumerism.
  4. Aiming for extensive growth in the finance sector, e-commerce platforms are taking active measures to comply with FSSAI's protocols, hoping to establish trust with customers concerning the safety of their food offerings.
  5. Showcasing their commitment to food safety, e-commerce platforms are adopting stricter trading standards, seeking to expand their market reach within the industry by demonstrating their understanding and adherence to food safety norms.
