Renault Group Leading in Immersive Digital Simulation Technology

Renault Group has taken a significant step forward in the realm of automotive innovation, unveiling its new immersive driving simulation tool, ROADS (Renault Operational Advanced Driving Simulator). This exceptional simulator, co-developed with AV Simulation, is likely the most powerful immersive driving simulation tool in the world.

The new building at Renault Group's Technocentre houses most of the company's immersive simulators, including the state-of-the-art ROADS simulator. Installed in a dedicated hall covering almost 1,400 m² and standing 12 m high, the simulator can house an entire vehicle in its dome, providing a 360° phygital immersion experience combining physical and digital elements.

The Scenario Factory in the Immersive Simulation Centre can digitally reproduce real roads, create imaginary ones, or mix the two. This versatility is made possible by ROADS, which reproduces precisely and faithfully the dynamic behavior of any vehicle in any conditions, including type of road, traffic density, interactions with other vehicles, altitude, weather, luminosity, and more.

The role of AV (autonomous vehicle) simulation in Renault Group's immersive simulators and the SCANeR© driving simulation software is to provide a realistic, versatile environment for testing, developing, and validating autonomous driving systems and advanced driver assistance technologies safely and efficiently. Real drivers can take a seat on board the digital twin in the ROADS immersive simulator to prove that the vehicle's behavior under development meets the expectations of future customers.

Renault Group has been a pioneer in digital simulation for over 25 years. The company's simulators can incorporate more and more parameters such as other vehicles on the road, road conditions, weather, reflections, and life on board like the driver's physiological data. The digital twin in the Immersive Simulation Centre brings together the characteristics of a vehicle, the modelling of its road behavior, and that of its driving assistance systems and on-board software.

"Massive" simulations carried out in the Cloud subject the digital twin to millions of road situations to test it in all possible conditions. The accuracy of simulation rendering reduces development costs by reducing the need for physical prototypes.

Renault Group's commitment to digital simulation is further evident in the 2,300 m² building dedicated to digital simulation at its Technocentre. The new Immersive Simulation Centre at Renault Group employs over 70 engineers, demonstrating the company's dedication to this cutting-edge technology.

Renault Group's use of virtual reality to immerse engineers in a digital vehicle without the need for physical prototypes is a testament to the company's forward-thinking approach to automotive innovation. With ROADS, Renault Group continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the automotive industry.
