Remote Work Future Uncertain, AR Tech Drives Change

A recent survey reveals a mixed outlook on the future of remote work. While 46% of decision-makers believe it will permanently exceed 30%, many industries are embracing digital technologies like augmented reality (AR) for remote production tasks. Martin Weisath, a manager at Sopra Steria, advises using pandemic experiences to shape future hybrid work models.

The shift towards remote work has been rapid and significant. Over the past year and a half, many companies and public administrations have had to restructure their operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Notably, 63% of these organisations provided infrastructure, introduced suitable software, and trained employees for remote work. Additionally, 84% of surveyed executives prioritised integrating home office and remote work in their organisational restructuring.

However, the manufacturing industry and public administration view home office as less viable. Despite this, a change of mindset is occurring, with production work being done remotely using digital technologies such as AR. Augmentir, for instance, is expanding its AI platform with new AR functions for the industry, potentially applicable in remote production settings. Many companies, including financial service providers, are maintaining or expanding their remote work shares. Every second insurer can now advise customers via video chat.

The future of remote work remains uncertain, with varying levels of acceptance across industries. While some sectors embrace it, others view it as less suitable. Nevertheless, the pandemic has driven organisations to invest in remote work infrastructure and technologies, with many now prioritising its integration into their operations.
