In a significant transformation, the JR Hitahikosan "Hikoboshi" Line, severely damaged by heavy rain and flooding in northern Kyushu in 2017, has been reimagined as a dedicated road for hydrogen fuel cell buses. This innovative approach to regional transportation is promoting eco-friendly, zero-emission public transit in Fukuoka and Oita prefectures.

Originally a railway line serving local communities, the extensive infrastructure damage caused by the 2017 downpours led to the cessation of train services, with restoration deemed uneconomical. Instead, the affected section was repurposed, marking a pioneering move in regional transportation.

The redevelopment has resulted in numerous benefits for the region.

The BRT Hikoboshi Line, now a new transport option in the prefectures, operates with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, featuring fast, efficient bus-based transit with dedicated roads and multi-section articulated vehicles. Among the buses running the BRT Hikoboshi Line is Toyota's fuel cell (FC) electric bus, another world-first mobility solution introduced in the program.

The rebuilt line restarted as a BRT service on August 28, marking a significant step towards a carbon-neutral future for the region.
