Nio Unveils Third-Generation ES8 SUV: A Leap Forward in Electric Vehicle Technology

Nio, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has unveiled its third-generation ES8 SUV. The new model, set to launch in the first half of 2026, promises to deliver a significant leap forward in EV technology.

Measuring 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,250 mm, the third-generation ES8 is significantly larger than its predecessor. It offers six- or seven-seat configurations, providing a spacious, luxurious interior reminiscent of Nio's flagship sedan, the ET9.

Under the hood, the new ES8 features a 102-kWh battery pack (with an optional 120-kWh upgrade), a triple LiDAR system, and advanced driver-assistance sensors on a new NT3.0 platform. The SUV delivers 707 horsepower and 700 Nm torque from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, accelerating 0-100 km/h in 3.97 seconds, and offering a CLTC range of about 635 km.

The third-generation ES8 also boasts a 5C fast charging capability, adding approximately 250 km range in just 5 minutes, and is battery swap technology-enabled. The SUV's interior is equipped with a central touchscreen similar to the ET9, digital rearview mirrors, and side-facing LiDARs.

Nio's founder, chairman, and CEO, William Li, announced these plans during a media briefing on August 1. The new ES8 was spotted in the wild earlier this month, and pre-sales began in China on August 21. The official launch event is scheduled for Nio Day 2025 in late September.

The third-generation ES8 marks a significant transition for Nio, as it is the first model to transition from the NT2.0 platform to the new NT3.0 platform. The second-generation ES8 was launched on December 24, 2022.

Nio will hold a product and technology event for the third-generation ES8 in late August, prior to its official launch. The company's flagship sedan, the ET9, was officially launched at Nio Day 2024. Meanwhile, Nio's new flagship SUV, the ES9, is planned to launch in the first half of 2026, and the sub-brand Onvo launched the L90 large SUV on August 1.
