Free Travel for Children in NRW on Action Day - VRS Extended for an Additional Day - Proposal sought for a directive shielding workers from ionizing radiation risks, according to the Commission.
On September 20th, 2025, children across North Rhine-Westphalia will have the opportunity to travel for free on public transportation, as part of the celebrations for World Children's Day. This one-time event is not a regular offer and does not apply to adult passengers.
The Westphalia Tariff Association has announced this statewide action, which includes buses, trams, and regional trains. The offer is not limited to specific routes or transportation providers and is valid throughout North Rhine-Westphalia.
In the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) region, the free travel offer applies to children under 15 years old. In other regions, it is limited to children up to and including 14 years old. This means that in the cities of Bielefeld and Cologne, children up to 14 years old can also benefit from this offer.
In Bielefeld, a special event is planned for World Children's Day, featuring a play area with old games to discover, a chance to try milking, and bee-making workshops. In Cologne, children will also be able to enjoy free travel on public transportation.
The free travel offer is intended to encourage mobility for children, and is supported by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV) in North Rhine-Westphalia.
It is worth noting that children under seven years old, who have not yet started school, generally travel for free on public transportation in North Rhine-Westphalia. No ticket is required for children to travel on this day.
In the VRS region, the free travel offer for children has been extended to two days, including September 21st.
Many activities for World Children's Day are expected in the VRS region. So, whether you're catching a train to a fun event or exploring the city with your family, children in North Rhine-Westphalia can enjoy a day of free travel on public transportation.
