In the wake of tempered enthusiasm for electric vehicles (EVs) and a looming wave of market uncertainty, Audi finds itself pondering the future of its prestigious Q8 E-Tron SUV. With the Biden administration's announcement of tariffs looming over imports, a decision to abandon the Brussels facility where the 2024 model was built—a move that left the EV's future unclear—has raised eyebrows.
The doubt surrounding the Q8 E-Tron's future could soon be dispelled, as rumors suggest Audi could opt to relocate production of three models to the United States to circumvent taxes. The Q8 E-Tron, among them, has been thrown into the mix.
Piqued by this development, we reached out to Audi for clarity on this speculative move (considering the considerable financial investment and lack of immediate ROI). To our surprise, Audi chose to acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding the Q8 E-Tron's future, stating that discussions are underway but no definitive decisions have been made yet.
According to reports, the Q8 E-Tron could potentially be built in the Blythewood, South Carolina facility that is being built for Scout Motors, Audi's sister company. However, this isn't the only possibility, as the Q8 E-Tron may be built using the Platform Premium Electric (PPE) that underpins the Q6 E-Tron, another possible U.S.-built model.
Building the Q8 E-Tron and Q6 E-Tron at the same Blythewood facility would save Audi on excess tooling, as both models could be produced on the same assembly line. However, since the Audis won't share any platform architecture with the body-on-frame, solid-axle Scouts, the South Carolina facility's main advantage is space.
Another contender in the production race is Porsche. It is believed that the Cayenne EV, also rumored to ride on the PPE chassis, could join Audi in the U.S. if they were to be built at the same facility, leading to significant cost savings.
Lastly, the Q4 E-Tron, built on a modified version of VW's existing MEB platform, is a Tennessee-bound possibility if Audi decides to pull the trigger on these proposed moves.
