Posco Opens EUR 57M EV Drive Motor Core Plant in Poland

Posco International has inaugurated a new plant in Brzeg, Poland, dedicated to producing drive motor cores for electric vehicles (EVs). The EUR 57 million facility is set to enhance energy efficiency and reduce noise, thanks to its innovative Hyper NO steel sheets and EMFree technology.

The plant boasts an annual output capacity of 1.2 million motor cores. Posco has already secured orders for 35 million units globally by 2033, including a significant 1.68 million units for European-made Hyundai and Kia EVs. The company is also in talks with other European car manufacturers like BMW and Volkswagen to secure further contracts.

The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures such as Posco International's CEO, Lee Kye-In, Opole Governor Monika Jurek, and South Korean Ambassador Tae Jun-Yeol. The plant is expected to play a crucial role in Posco Group's ambition to secure a 10% share of global EV drive motor core sales by 2030.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that annual battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe will reach 4 million units in 2025, with BEVs accounting for 55% of new vehicle sales by 2030. Hyundai Motor Group, a key customer for Posco's motor cores, plans to increase its BEV production in Europe in the coming years, aiming for an annual production capacity of 7.5 million units by 2030 across plants in South Korea, Mexico, Poland, and India.

Trial production at the new Posco plant in Brzeg is set to begin in October, with full commercial production commencing in December. This facility, with its advanced technology and strategic partnerships, is poised to contribute significantly to the growing demand for EV drive motor cores in Europe and beyond.
