Phison, an SSD manufacturer, proves its reputation following Windows 11 bricking fears, as extensive tests lasting 4,500 hours yield zero drive failures.
Phison, a leading supplier of drive controllers, has addressed concerns about its products being responsible for the drive failures reportedly caused by the Windows 11 version 24H2 security update KB5063878.
The controversy began when user @Necoru_cat (aka Nekorusukii) posted their findings on August 14, following testing of 21 different hard drives. Nekorusukii suggested that a Phison controller could be causing the problem. This claim picked up steam on tech forums, with NichePCGamer adding fuel to the SSD failure drama by listing several more drives with which it claims users have had issues.
However, Phison was quick to investigate the claims of drive failures following reports online. The company tested over 2,200 SSDs suspected to be affected by the Windows 11 update bug for 4,500 hours and was unable to reproduce any of the reported issues.
The rumor about issues with Phison controllers under Windows 11 originated in Japan, where reports claimed copying large files over 50 GB on partially filled drives could lead to SSD or HDD disappearance. However, Microsoft and Phison's extensive tests found no such problems and no link to Windows updates.
It is unclear where the fake document originated, leading to speculation of a potential conspiracy to tarnish Phison's reputation. The fake document includes a list of Phison controller models that are allegedly affected by the Windows 11 updates.
Phison has provided some best practices for its storage customers to ensure optimal performance. The company will continue to monitor the situation in collaboration with industry partners.
A Reddit thread highlighting the matter contains arguments for both sides, with some users reporting similar SSD issues and others warning of waiting for more information before pointing fingers. Microsoft's Windows 11 24H2 security update KB5063878 was initially released, containing a different installation error related to Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). This bug was patched promptly by Microsoft.
Phison was quick to release an official statement to Tom's Hardware, assuring its customers that its controllers are not to blame for the drive failures reportedly caused by the Windows 11 version 24H2 security update KB5063878. The company's in-depth testing should help alleviate concerns that its controllers are responsible for the reported drive failures.
