Pforzheim Shifts to Mastodon: A Privacy-Focused and Flexible Alternative to Twitter

The city of Pforzheim, Germany, has made a significant move in the digital landscape, opting to use Mastodon as an alternative to Twitter. The city's editorial account can be found at bawü.social/@stadtpforzheim.

This decision comes in response to the developments on the Twitter platform, as the city seeks a more privacy-compliant and flexible social media solution. Pforzheim's last announcement on Twitter was made on October 10, and the city's Twitter account, which had over 3,200 followers, has since been shut down.

Mastodon, a decentralized social network, offers several benefits that make it an attractive choice. It operates as a federated social network, with data stored across many distributed servers (called instances) rather than centralized in a single company. This model supports data sovereignty and compliance with privacy regulations like GDPR, as users can choose or run instances that meet strict privacy standards.

The city's Mastodon account allows for the integration of content on the city's homepage, enabling those without their own social media account to follow along. This feature fosters a more inclusive and accessible digital environment.

Moreover, Mastodon's community-centric governance allows each instance to be managed independently, allowing communities like Pforzheim to tailor rules, moderation, and features to local needs. This flexibility enables more responsive and transparent governance compared to Twitter's centralized policies.

Mastodon also supports varied content policies and post length limits depending on the instance. This means Pforzheim can benefit from fewer arbitrary restrictions, like Twitter’s traditional character limits, and foster diverse and meaningful local discourse.

Studies comparing Mastodon to Twitter show generally low toxicity levels and wider subject diversity in Mastodon communities, indicating a more respectful and varied social environment beneficial for public communication by a city authority.

Furthermore, Mastodon’s federated network connects multiple independent servers, enabling cross-server communication. This means Pforzheim's Mastodon instance can still interact with other federated communities, expanding its reach without sacrificing privacy or control.

All new messages from the city of Pforzheim's editorial account on Mastodon are simultaneously published on all other services. The city's press team had been distributing announcements and providing coverage of some council meetings on Twitter until recently. However, they will no longer use Twitter for these purposes.

Instead, they have been using Mastodon for these tasks, and during the city's last council meeting, the press team followed the proceedings via Mastodon. Accounts can be found and followed using the integrated search function on Mastodon.

It's worth noting that the social media service previously known as Twitter, now named "X," has been under scrutiny due to erratic usage rules, pricing models, and Elon Musk's spreading of right-wing extremist conspiracy theories. This shift towards Mastodon highlights Pforzheim's commitment to a more privacy-focused and community-controlled digital environment.
