Peugeot's New 308 Emphasizes Comfort and Efficiency

Peugeot's new 308 shifts focus to comfort and efficiency, moving away from its predecessors' sporty image. It offers a refined ride and impressive fuel economy.

The 308's 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine delivers 130bhp and 170lb ft of torque, accelerating from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds. It's expected to achieve around 50mpg in real-world driving.

The car features a smooth drive, park, and reverse selector, along with a 'drive mode' selector for various driving styles. It provides a quiet ride at motorway speeds and decent body control on back roads, balancing ride, handling, and entertainment.

The 308's platform is less advanced than rivals like the Ford Focus or Mercedes A-Class, using McPherson struts upfront and a torsion beam rear. The 225 plug-in hybrid offers 178bhp but falls short of full GTI status.

Peugeot equips the 308 with a suite of driver aids, including lane keep assist and semi-automatic lane change. Plug-in hybrid versions offer up to 85 km of pure electric range and real-world fuel economy of around 80mpg in electric mode. The diesel version is ideal for high mileage motorway drivers, while the mild hybrid provides a relaxing drive with electric assistance at low speeds.

The Peugeot 308 marks a shift towards refinement and efficiency. With a smooth ride, impressive fuel economy, and a suite of driver aids, it's well-equipped for modern driving. While its platform may not match pricier rivals, it offers a compelling package for those prioritising comfort and economy.
