The 2024 Best Picture nominees are a diverse group, each offering a unique cinematic experience. However, a closer look at their primary moods, as categorized by Gracenote's Video Descriptors, reveals some interesting trends.

Since 2010, 82% of Best Picture nominees have had primary moods falling under four of the top 17 moods: 'emotional', 'fun', 'powerful', or 'tense'. This year, nine out of ten nominees continue this trend, with the exception of the 'wondrous' Poor Things.

Anatomy of a Fall and Poor Things are this year's Best Picture nominees, with the former being a 'tense' contender, and the latter a 'fantastic' and 'wondrous' film. The 'romantic' Past Lives stands alone as the only nominee with one of the eight calmer L1 moods amongst its primary descriptions.

The 'moving' Maestro and the 'somber' The Zone of Interest both have 'emotional' moods. The Zone of Interest also has a 'frightening' mood amongst its most important. Since 2010, only Get Out (2017) and 127 Hours (2011) were the other Best Picture nominees with a 'frightening' primary mood.

This year's 'powerful' nominees include Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Past Lives. Interestingly, only 26% of Best Picture nominees in the last 10 years have had one of the eight calmer L1 moods as their primary mood, compared to 42% from 2005 to 2014.

Parasite (2020), the only Best Picture winner since The Departed (2007), does not have a primary mood classified under 'emotional', 'fun', 'powerful', or 'tense' in Gracenote's Video Descriptors.
