Operational in Virginia: Emovis' system for toll collection without barriers
In a significant stride for modern transportation, Emovis, in collaboration with Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC), has unveiled a free-flow news system at the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels in Virginia. This new system is designed to enhance the overall travel experience for users, providing accurate, reliable toll collection, minimizing revenue leakage, and improving operational efficiency.
The project includes four tolling gantries, two each at the Downtown Tunnel and Midtown Tunnel. Each gantry is equipped with advanced roadside sensors and pavement detection technology, processing vehicle data via Emovis' cloud-based platform, Emovis Identify. This platform generates accurate, uniform transaction messages, which are integrated with ERC's Toll Transaction Host for rating and invoicing in near real time.
CEO of Emovis, Tom Styszynski, expressed his excitement about the partnership with ERC, stating, "This project represents a significant milestone in our mission to transform transportation systems worldwide." The new system was implemented alongside the existing road toll collection system, which will be decommissioned after the full adoption of the new platform.
The partnership between Emovis and ERC has resulted in a cutting-edge tolling solution for the region. As part of this innovative system, vehicles pass under the gantries without the need for traditional toll booths, streamlining the travel experience.
On a global scale, Emovis is furthering its commitment to user-financed transportation through its involvement in the Akabo Media's Road User Charging Conference series. This series will take place in Brussels (March 2025), Abu Dhabi (May 2025), Miami (September 2025), and Singapore (October 2025). The conference series aims to bring together senior decision-makers from around the world to discuss trends and challenges in user-financed transportation.
Attendees of the conference series can look forward to gaining insights, sharing innovative ideas, and networking with global leaders driving the transformation of transportation systems. The series will provide opportunities for attendees to learn about the latest advancements in tolling technology, such as the one implemented in Virginia by Emovis and ERC.
