Openreach's 5,000th EV Hits the Road in Push for 2031 Carbon Neutrality

Openreach has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey, with the 5,000th electric van now on the road. This marks a crucial step towards its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2031, supporting the UK's net-zero ambitions.

The company, which maintains the UK's largest phone and broadband network, has committed to upgrading most of its 23,000-strong fleet to electric vans. This ambitious plan includes adding another 2,000 electric vans by March 2026, demonstrating its dedication to reducing emissions and improving air quality.

Openreach is not only investing in electric vans but also expanding charging infrastructure. It has installed over 2,500 chargers at operational sites and engineers' homes. Furthermore, it has partnered with First Bus to allow engineers to charge their vans at bus depots, easing pressure on public charging points. Additionally, Openreach has collaborated with BP Pulse to further expand its charging network for the 5,000 electric vans.

The 5,000 electric vans on the road are expected to save over 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to removing more than 7,000 petrol cars from UK roads each year. Openreach's commitment to sustainability is clear, with its 'Let's Reach Zero' branding now adorning the 5,000th electric van. The company continues to invest in electric vans and charging infrastructure, driving towards its carbon neutral goal by 2031.
