OpenAI Quietly Removes io Collaboration Announcement Amid Trademark Dispute
OpenAI has quietly removed an announcement of its collaboration with Jony Ive's startup io from its platforms. This follows a trademark dispute with Iyo, a company specializing in hearing aids. Despite this, OpenAI confirms its acquisition deal with io remains active.
OpenAI and Jony Ive's io had announced a partnership in late 2021 to develop specialized AI hardware. The collaboration was detailed in a blog post and video featuring Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. However, these have since been taken down.
The removal comes after a trademark lawsuit was initiated by Iyo. OpenAI has not publicly linked this dispute to the removal of io-related content. Nevertheless, all public references to io have been scrubbed from OpenAI's digital platforms.
OpenAI acquired io for approximately $6.5 billion. The acquisition was part of OpenAI's broader initiative to create bespoke AI hardware solutions. Despite the recent developments, OpenAI is reviewing its options in response to the trademark dispute.
The removal of OpenAI's collaboration announcement with io raises questions about the future of their partnership. While the acquisition agreement stands, the public visibility of their collaboration has been withdrawn. OpenAI is currently assessing its response to the trademark dispute with Iyo.
