OpenAI Boosts ChatGPT Safety with Parental Controls and Enhanced Routing
OpenAI has announced a series of safety measures for ChatGPT, following tragic incidents involving young users. The company is introducing parental control features and enhancing its safety protocols to protect vulnerable users. In response to recent cases, including a lawsuit from the parents of a 16-year-old who took their own life after interacting with ChatGPT, OpenAI is rolling out new features within the next month. These include parental control functions that allow account linking, age-appropriate rule setting, and distress notifications. OpenAI is also introducing a new router that can recognize acute stress signals and redirect conversations to appropriate models, such as the 'Reasoning Models' trained with Deliberative Alignment for longer thinking and consistent safety guideline adherence. These models, like the upcoming GPT-5-thinking, are designed to provide safer responses in sensitive situations. OpenAI has collaborated with over 90 medical professionals from 30 countries to develop these safety features. Currently, OpenAI refers users with suicidal thoughts to hotlines but does not automatically notify authorities due to privacy reasons. The new measures aim to provide more immediate and appropriate support. OpenAI's new safety features, to be implemented within the next 120 days, are a significant step towards protecting young users and handling psychological distress more effectively. By introducing parental control features and enhancing its conversation routing system, OpenAI demonstrates its commitment to ensuring ChatGPT is a safe and responsible tool.
