Digital SIM Re-registration in Ghana Eliminates Queues and Boosts Convenience
In a significant move towards modernizing the telecommunications sector, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, announced a queue-free, online SIM card re-registration process in Ghana. The new system, scheduled to launch in June 2025, aims to make the re-registration faster, more accurate, and user-friendly for Ghanaians.
The ongoing SIM card re-registration exercise, which started in 2021, has faced challenges, including low participation and concerns about privacy and data security. To address these issues, the new digital system allows citizens to complete their SIM registration online, using the Ghana Card for verification. This eliminates the need for manual checks and long queues, reducing errors and saving time.
The new system is part of an initiative to link every SIM card to a Ghana Card, combating fraud and crime linked to unregistered SIMs. Support for users will be available through dedicated call and WhatsApp contacts in major Ghanaian cities, including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Cape Coast.
The change represents a significant shift from earlier manual, queue-based registration methods towards digital convenience. The new system is expected to improve data accuracy, cut wait times, and boost convenience and efficiency in the telecom sector.
As of August 2025, there is no indication that the announced timeline has been altered, so the planned June 2025 launch appears to be on track. However, some reports suggest delays in other telecommunications initiatives, such as the 5G rollout, but these do not directly affect the SIM re-registration online process timeline.
Despite the progress made, millions of SIMs remain unregistered in Ghana. The government aims to improve regulatory oversight in the telecom sector through the SIM re-registration process, ensuring a secure and reliable telecommunications environment for all Ghanaians.
