Online announcement by the National Archives: Accessibility of Records for Federal Agencies Via the Web on September 1, 2000
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has taken a significant step forward in its Records Center Program, making it easier for Federal agencies to access their records. The new web-based access to the Centers Information Processing System (CIPS) is now available, and it has received strong positive reactions from Federal agencies.
NARA's Records Center Program, an integrated approach that makes NARA an active participant in the life cycle of Federal records, has been in operation since 1950. The program is administered by a professional staff familiar with Federal agencies, Federal records, and Federal records management needs. This team manages a national network of 16 records centers, storing and providing access to an impressive 21 million boxes of records.
The expansion of CIPS online marks a major improvement from the previous modem-based system. The new web interface is easier to use, with drop-down lists, check boxes, and button-clicks replacing typing and function key sequences. This user-friendly design is expected to increase efficiency and responsiveness for Federal agencies.
Bette Fugitt, Records Officer at the Department of Agriculture, reports that having access to CIPS online is a valuable new resource. She and other Federal customers can now request their records from NARA over the Internet, a significant advancement in records management.
Archivist John W. Carlin stated that the new online service is just the beginning of state-of-the-art information technology developments at NARA. He emphasised that this expansion is part of NARA's ongoing commitment to providing superior records storage, access, and disposition services.
Federal agencies can access CIPS at www.ourwebsite.gov/frc/. For additional press information, the National Archives Public Affairs staff can be contacted at 301-837-1700 or by email.
The National Archives Records Administration (NARA) has been providing records management support to the Federal Government since 1934. With this latest development, NARA continues to demonstrate its dedication to serving the needs of Federal agencies and ensuring the preservation of our nation's history.
